Carbon 14 (C-14) Analysis

Carbon 14 (C-14) Analysis

Bureau Veritas provides Carbon-14 (C-14) analysis according to ASTM D6866, EN 16640, and DIN 51637 standards. Our trained chemists can support you in analysing samples using the Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) method, to ensure feedstocks and end products contain C-14 biogenic content.

C-14 analysis can be applied to certain types of renewable fuels and feedstocks such as biodiesel, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), to assess their biogenic carbon content.

This is particularly important for assessing the renewable content of biofuels and feedstocks, as biofuels are derived from biomass that contain carbon-14, unlike fossil fuels. The analysis helps in quantifying the fraction of carbon in the biofuel that originates from renewable sources.

Our C-14 testing method and process is certified by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RVA) under the ISO 17025 accreditation, which is in line with the Dutch Emissions Authority’s (NEA) requirements for the analysis of renewable fuels and biofuel feedstocks.

C-14 Sampling and Analysis Services

The C-14 testing method can be applied to all fuels that are bright and clear according to ASTM D1500 colour L3.0, such as:

  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
  • Biodiesel (B5, B20)
  • FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters)
  • HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)
  • HEFA (Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids)
  • Diesel
  • Gas oil
  • Jet Fuel
  • Bio-ethanol

In addition to these services, we also provide customised solutions to meet your specific needs.
