SMETA AND SMETA-AIM PROGRESS ETHICAL AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ASSESSMENT

INTRODUCING SMETA AND SMETA-AIM PROGRESS ETHICAL AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ASSESSMENT

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the often synonymous concept of sustainability have become firmly anchored in society, politics and business in recent decades. Nowadays, CSR has entered many organisations and is part of the strategy and operational operations.

This development is partly due to the fact that the government and the business community increasingly and broadly regard CSR as a critical condition for success. In many cases, CSR also acts as a distinctive factor.

Against this background, public authorities, NGOs and industry have taken numerous initiatives at international level to give concrete expression to corporate social responsibility. The development of the SMETA assessment framework and the additional SMETA-AIM Progress assessment framework is a prominent example of this.

SMETA AND SMETA-AIM PROGRESS – VERSION 6.0

The Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) assessment framework has been developed under the direction of the global non-profit partnership Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) founded in 2001. The aim of the standard is to promote and further develop ethical and corporate social responsibility and associated 'best practices'.

In addition to the Sedex initiative, the European Association of Brand Manufacturers Association des Industrie de Marque (AIM) developed a more comprehensive version of the standards framework, which is referred to as SMETA-AIM Progress. The current sixth version of these harmonised review protocols has been in force since 2017.

STANDARD CONTENT

The SMETA assessment framework, also known as SMETA 2-Pillar, focuses on working conditions, working circumstances, health and safety and a number of specific aspects derived from the United Nations Global Compact principles, including human rights, labour law and the environment.

The SMETA-AIM Progress assessment framework, also known as SMETA 4-Pillar, in addition to more extensive requirements on the elements of the SMETA assessment framework, consists of a package of environmental requirements and a section related to business integrity.

SCOPE

Smeta and SMETA-AIM Progress review frameworks apply to suppliers and producers of consumer goods, food and non-food. The methodology is generic and can be applied worldwide to suppliers and producers, regardless of their size, number of employees or the type of product they trade or produce.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

The assessment process consists of an external assessment – not a formal certification – according to the SMETA or SMETA-AIM Progress standards framework, and follows a fixed pattern in which the organisation to be assessed first prepares via a self-assessment and a risk assessment and evaluation. After that, an initial audit or assessment is carried out, followed by follow-up audits.  The scope and frequency of the follow-up audits depend on the results of the initial audit, and can take place 1, 2 or 3 years after the initial audit.

ADDITIONAL STANDARDS

An organisation can use SMETA and SMETA-AIM Progress as standalone assessment frameworks, but combinations with management system standards are also possible, such as with ISO 9001 (quality) or theme-specific standards.
